The Selfrom Design 5 Interior Design Studio with Prof. Lisa Phillips
This retail space is an exploration of microscopic cell structure. The building is a journey, a living embodiment of moving through cells. Experimenting with cellular forms in plan and three dimensions creates immersive experiences. The design takes this beautiful pure box of the existing church and drives these forms through the interior. The space corresponds and relates to the structure of a plant, starting from the base and concluding at the leaf, as the user gets closer to the sunlight. Products sold relate to each floor. The first floor represents the base and refers to the soil and roots. The second floor relates to growth and represents the trunk while the third floor sells more mature plants as it represents the leaf or canopy.

Abigail Stubb B.S. Interior Design '22 Listening to Rollin' Stone by Kyle Lux I want to be working in a place where I am passionate, challenged, and excited about the work I am doing. I know I want to be creating and making a difference through my designs. I want to be an advocate and revolutionize the definition society holds of Interior Design, bringing awareness to the field. |
What makes you passionate as a designer?
Inspiration is constantly around us. I am very passionate about the experience of space and how spaces make us feel and behave. We are constantly interacting with the environment around us and we perceive these environments through our bodies and our senses. As Interior Designers, we have the ability to orchestrate and influence how people feel in a space and I think that is really beautiful and powerful. I am fascinated by nature and the relationship with our man made world. Through research on microscopic cell structure I applied what I learned from nature into architecture, tapping into nature's billion years of knowledge. As humans, we need to get back to nature and step away from these sterile, man made environments that we have come to accept. This connection to nature is what is truly comforting to us as human beings from an evolutionary standpoint. I am also inspired by color, art, textile design, sculpture, graphic design, and typography. |
