This project involved both graphic designers and landscape architects to work with community members in Kingsessing, Philadelphia. The goal was to develop a large scale, multi-component design system and toolkit by bringing pollinators and the community together. We created an after school program that is pollinator oriented to engage both the youth and seniors of the Kingsessing community. The graphic designers involved in this project includes Peyton Dobson, Antonia Milas, and Aryana Shah.
Our project of Pollinator Pals directly connects with enacting a social and education change directly within the Kingsessing community. Our goal is to inspired the community to care about pollinators which would then create a foundation that encourages the youth to find pride in their neighborhood. |
Pollinator Pals also works with the senior age group as it is typically overlooked in a neighborhood. Yet, Pollinator Pals looks at them as a valuable tool to work with the youth on a weekly schedule to support the community. Young adults who age out of the scouts inspired program can later become paid leaders to assist in the youth/senior activities. The landscape that I designed acts as a central meeting place for Pollinator Pals and it focuses on horticultural therapy to benefit both the senior and youth age groups who would utilize the space.

Why is creating change important to you?
Change is so important within Philadelphia neighborhoods that tend to be overlooked by the city, which this project aims to help. It is important to inspire hope and opportunity within a community so they can change their space as it best fits their desires. Getting the chance to work with the Kingsessing community directly was really impactful and helped to shape our project of Pollinator Pals. Change starts with working on expanding the existing assets a community to further other neighborhood based projects that may have originally been overlooked. - Loganne Caka |
