This independent study will focus on architecture through the use of black and white film photography. Photography will be used to capture the feeling and character of a space that goes beyond the aesthetics of a building. When making photographs, one creates a single snapshot in time. The use of freezing time in photographs is typically done to make a picture perfect rendition of a building, but in this case, it will be used to show the true character of a space. To capture the feeling of a space, these photographs will pay careful attention to the use of light and shadow, scale, and framing when making a composition. This independent study will allow me to work on furthering my skills in developing film and making enlargements adjusting the contrast and exposure as well as cropping to make an image.

Metropolis: A Study in the Urban Dreamscape
|
From Victoria Oakes Independent Study with Prof. Jack Carnell
This series studies occupants of built environment within urban contexts. Cities can elicit feelings of tangible alienation even when they are filled with millions of people. Applying a diffusion filter in camera helped emulate surreal visions of space. The images were captured in three cities on the East Coast: Philadelphia, Rochester, and New York. These cities were formative in my understanding of my own place within urban space.
