Shared Cityfrom Visualization 3 for Interiors with Prof. Severino Alfonso
This abstract design of the Architecture and Design Center at Thomas Jefferson University’s East Falls campus unites the natural and built environment by combining the sharp geometric shapes and rough edges found in both environments. It is through this combination that harmony is achieved and the two environments can sustainably coexist and thrive off of one another.
As a redesigned art museum, the space is designed to feel exhilarating and exciting. Combining the forms found in the built environment, such as city skylines, with the natural environment, such as mountain ranges, creates an abstract and unique spatial experience that encourages exploration. A variety of curtain walls, angular door openings, and pointed elements are utilized in this design. Blending these architectural movements with a pop of yellow acrylic and glass, brings a bright and fun energy into the space. |

How would you describe your design process?
The way I attack design is by coming up with a concept that is either derived from the energy of the existing building, the client and program, and the surrounding area. From there I make an abstract 3D model, either digitally or by hand, that embodies the spirit of the concept, and then from there I find inspiration images that resemble important aspects from my concept and 3D model that I want to honor in the actual design. It is through this process that I find I end up with a design that is fluent with the existing building as well as sculptural and elevating to the human experience. How do you know if your project is successful? I know my project will be successful based on if I challenged myself and learned something new. To me, no matter the outcome of a critique, I always internally know if this was the best work I could do, and I always strive to have each project be better and different then the last. If I try new tools, styles, or color pallets for example, that push me out of my comfort zone, then I know I learned something and therefore see the project as successful. |
