The Multiverse

from an Independent Study with Prof. Andrew Hart
The initial sequence tells the story Dimensional Pylons, a collection of experiences describing various interactions with the mysterious pylons which link the multiverse that Sal has created.

The project focus transitioned to creating larger scale environments. With each rendering, the idea of the narrative became increasingly more important. These images further explored lighting, composition, and staging as narrative elements. This study started before the Fall 2020 semester officially began. The initial charrettes were set out to create one rendering a week with the goal of achieving different visual styles through Unreal Engines shader system. At this stage the main goal was to simply create for creation’s sake, the narrative strength or visual fidelity of each image came second to the development of a workflow and engine familiarity.

"Within the vast multiverse exists a single structure of an ever changing form. Across infinite planes this structure acts as a pylon between dimensions, worshiped by some and unknown to others."

Experimental Architectural Animation and Visualization Minor
Listening to Reflections by Bliss En Eso
I take inspiration from my passion for video games, cinematography, and animation and let that influence my visual work and design process.

Exploration

This study started before the Fall 2020 semester officially began. The initial charettes were set out to create one rendering a week with the goal of achieving different visual styles through Unreal Engines shader system. At this stage the main goal was to simply create for creations sake, the narrative strength or visual fidelity of each image came second to the development of a workflow and engine familiarity.
As weeks progressed the atmosphere became an important part of each image. The way the atmosphere was crafted using fog, lighting, and particle effects to tell the story and create the mood. The idea that the atmosphere and environment were just as important as the architectural elements of the scene carried throughout the semester.

What was the design process like?
Each rendering began with a series of sketches focusing on exploring the scenes lighting, composition, and general forms present in the space. As the semester progressed the weekly charettes were given more time to allow the process to develop with more depth.
The camera became a major element of work. Each rendering asked the question of what is the cameras role? The camera could be a silent observer, a character of itself, or serve as the untrustworthy narrator of the narrative.
