Summitfrom Design 5 Interior Architecture Studio -1st Place in National IDEC Competition
The Summit represents arrival and personal achievement, a safe vantage point from which to move into the next phase of a journey. This living community supports veterans returning to civilian life as they seek to achieve wellness and build meaningful roles within their communities. The spaces and facility programming are designed to encourage healthy living, social connection, self-empowerment, skill acquisition, and community engagement and support.
Design for social sustainability means providing opportunities for CONNECTION within the program. Shared common spaces such as the art studio, library, and rec room/lounge support both structured and casual modes of socialization. A large communal kitchen does both, offering movable worktables that can be configured to host cooking classes. ADVOCACY is about moving beyond ADA standards and drawing upon Universal Design principles to create a physical space that supports all users. Some veterans experience PTSD, while others cope with polytrauma, a condition that occurs when multiple disabling conditions alongside PTSD occur in combination. Furthermore, some veterans may identify with historically marginalized groups such as gender non-conforming or transgender individuals. Therefore, public restrooms in the space are gender-neutral. To support differently-abled users, built-in benches adjoining residents’ apartments are designed according to ADA specifications. |
"Humanity is a story of shared and sometimes conflicting voices. Until we learn to elevate and celebrate voices that historically have been forcibly muted through racism, sexism, homophobia, and ableism, we as an industry will be a poor reflection of the rich beauty that is the human experience." |

M.S. Interior Architecture '21 Listening to When You Believe by Whitney & Mariah I always want to learn how improve and enhance the interior of a building and achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. Recently, I won a prestigious scholarship through Jazan University (KSA) to pursue my education in the Ph.D. program in the US and be qualified to join the faculty of Interior Design in Jazan University. M.S. Interior Architecture '21 Listening to Neptune by FOALS My undergraduate degree is in Archaeology with a minor in Anthropology; I've always been fascinated by the complexities of identity, collective memory, and material culture. Before I start working on a design, I start by considering the human experience I'm striving to capture, call out, or construct. |
How is your design innovative?
We rooted our design in the language of our concept. As open spaces dialogue with overhangs and alcoves, prospect and refuge becomes an architectural feature. Spaces, including the corridors, are active and dynamic. - Hayley Wynne |
"The concept for this design came about after I took a hike in the Wissahickon and paused at Lover’s Leap to take in the view!"- Hayley Wynne |
"Taking the role of the user allows me to imagine how I would use the space and the influence that the experience has on my mood."-Fulla Hazazi |
How much did research affect your design?
This project was entirely guided by research. Every decision, including the program, materiality, lighting, and color palette, was based on current research and best practices. |
