The Butterfly Effects small changes allow for bigger change. The butterfly inspires thoughts of change and symbolizes the beauty of diversity and continued development. flexible zoning: Giving the users a choice and variety in space; allows a variety of uses which form the building blocks of the system.
Flexible zoning separates areas according to functions and either encourages engagement or allows for better privacy. Our goal is to help orient the users through the use of color, light, function, materiality, and sound. We plan on providing optional zoning and giving users a choice to change the space based on their preferences. Overall, these things should help the user to function better by being able to mentally prepare for a change in a space before actually entering it. Flexible zoning can also teach the user to be able to distinguish whether or not something is causing them to feel a certain way, and helps them to make a decision by being able to customize a space to their needs when necessary. |
Providing flexibility in not only spaces but in furniture is vital. Students that are diagnosed with autism all have different needs and they vary day to day. Breaking the space up into smaller spaces with flexibility of furniture should be implemented. Creating “micro environments” within larger spaces provide calmness to students on the spectrum, as well as different configurations of enclosure to provide refuge. Escape spaces should be integrated within larger spaces whether it’s free standing or partitioned along pathways or open space.
